Trading sharply lower as a group in sympathy with Bitcoin, which has broken back below the $91,000 level. The cryptocurrency has faced resistance around the $96,000 level since Friday, briefly reaching that area on Monday morning before falling by roughly $5,000. Ethereum is similarly weak, trading below $3,100 as of early Monday morning.

Semiconductors and AI Plays

On watch as the US provides updates to its chip export controls. Ally and partner countries like Japan, Britain, and the Netherlands will be exempt from new export controls on AI chips, while major cloud providers like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft could be eligible unlimited AI chips for data centers. These regulations, deemed critical to U.S. competitiveness, set export quotas for about 120 countries and require U.S.-based providers to retain at least half their controlled AI chips domestically.

Tesla Inc (TSLA)

The stock’s price target was raised from $400 to $430 by Morgan Stanley, with the analyst citing the growing importance of autonomous vehicles (AVs) and "embodied AI" as key drivers for the company’s long-term potential. Morgan Stanley emphasized Tesla's unique competitive advantages in data, robotics, energy, AI, and its ecosystem of Musk-led companies. The analyst also predicted an expanded total addressable market (TAM) beyond traditional EVs by 2025, supported by revised models for Tesla Mobility and Network Services.

Apple Inc (AAPL)

On watch after Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman revealed that the company is preparing to launch the iPhone 17 Air. This product is reportedly a thinner and more advanced device featuring a 6.6-inch ProMotion OLED display, Apple’s A19 chip, and proprietary in-house modem and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chips. The slim design, acting as a precursor to foldable devices, underscores Apple's push for innovation and could redefine smartphone standards while challenging competitors and reshaping tech industry dynamics.

Moderna Inc (MRNA)

Gapping down after providing weaker-than-expected revenue guidance for 2025, citing weak demand for its Covid and RSV vaccines. Ahead of its appearance at the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference on Monday, the company projected 2025 revenue between $1.5 billion and $2.5 billion, well below estimates of $2.951 billion. Moderna also projected a $1 billion decrease in cash cost expenses for 2025, with costs to be cut by another $500 million in 2026.

Palantir Technologies Inc (PLTR)

Trading lower premarket. The stock dropped 15% last week amid an Underweight rating from Morgan Stanley and a $15 million share sale from Cathie Wood’s Ark Invest. Many investors and market participants have raised concerns about the valuation of Palantir, which began to trade lower following its inclusion in the Nasdaq-100 at the end of December. The consensus analyst rating for the stock is Hold with an average price target of $44.81, according to data from Barchart.

Quantum Stocks

Several stocks in the group are gapping down with strong premarket volume. The stocks began to sell off last week after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang commented that quantum computers are likely 15 to 30 years away. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg echoed Huang’s comments during an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience over the weekend, saying that quantum is “still quite a ways of from being a truly practical paradigm”. Many of the tickers in this group have short floats of greater than 10%.

Lululemon Athletica Inc (LULU)

Trading higher premarket after raising its guidance for Q4 2024. Revenue guidance was hiked from $3.475 billion-$3.510 billion to $3.56 billion-$3.58 billion, above estimates of $3.517 billion. The company now sees earnings per share for the quarter between $5.81 to $5.85, above its previous guide of $5.56 to $5.64 and surpassing analyst estimates of $5.66. Lululemon is slated to attend the ICR Conference from January 13-15 alongside several other retail brands.

Gapping up on no apparent catalyst. The stock, which has rallied in the past, has a market capitalization of $8.94 million and a float of 2.46 million shares. Approximately 4.18% of the stock’s float is sold short.
