Sector & Theme Watch

AI earnings test keeps chip tape unsettled

Nasdaq futures are lower and AI-linked stocks are mixed as Nvidia after-close earnings and Marvell on Thursday become the main tests for AI demand, margins, memory costs and capital-spending tolerance. Why it matters: Nvidia, Marvell, Semtech and the memory complex are the cleanest near-term reads on whether AI infrastructure spending can keep supporting semiconductor valuations. What to watch: Watch Nvidia guidance, China commentary, memory-cost pressure, data-center networking orders, Marvell setup and whether Nasdaq weakness spreads beyond chips.

Operating-company read-throughs: NVDA, MRVL, SMTC, MU, AMD, NVTS
Software and cybersecurity face an AI monetization check

Salesforce, CrowdStrike, Okta, Veeva and MongoDB report after the close, while Intuit, Zoom, Box and nCino reactions show investors separating AI traction from guidance risk. Why it matters: The desk needs to separate confirmed company earnings from broader software valuation concerns tied to AI adoption, pricing and enterprise demand. What to watch: Watch CRPO/ARR, enterprise revenue, security AI metrics, consumption-pricing comments, repurchase support and whether guidance beats are rewarded or faded.

Operating-company read-throughs: CRM, CRWD, OKTA, INTU, ZM, BOX
Oil falls as Hormuz optimism shifts energy read-throughs

WTI and Brent are lower after reports of diplomatic progress and safer Strait of Hormuz navigation, pressuring energy-linked equities while easing fuel-cost pressure elsewhere. Why it matters: Energy producers, refiners, oilfield services and fuel-sensitive transport names can react differently to the same oil move. What to watch: Watch EIA inventories, renewed Iran/Oman headlines, crude futures, refiners, integrated majors and airline or freight reactions.

Operating-company read-throughs: XOM, CVX, APA, PARR, MPC, DAL
Retail earnings keep discretionary demand in focus

DICK'S prior-session guidance cut and Wednesday reports from Abercrombie, Bath & Body Works, Kohl's, Williams-Sonoma and Smucker keep consumer demand, promotions and margins in focus. Why it matters: Retailers and staples companies are giving the desk fresh reads on promotions, footwear demand, value-seeking consumers, home-goods resilience and packaged-food pressure. What to watch: Watch same-store sales, full-year guidance, inventory comments, promotional intensity, tariff commentary and read-throughs to Nike, Target and other discretionary brands.

Operating-company read-throughs: DKS, ANF, BBWI, KSS, WSM, SJM

Stocks in Focus

NVIDIA - NVDA
+0.32%

On watch ahead of its Q2 2027 earnings report, scheduled to be released on Wednesday, August 26 (ETA 4:20 PM ET). Analysts are looking for the company to post earnings of $2.09 per share and revenue of $91.71 billion. Why it matters: BofA expects Nvidia to beat and raise guidance by 3–4% in Q2, with investors more focused on potential disclosure of large multi-year commitments to secure AI supply, power, cloud services and demand. The firm argues NVDA’s valuation has fallen too far relative to peers and sees substantial upside from stronger cash returns, suggesting a 50–75% FCF payout could support the stock as free cash flow approaches $1 billion per day.

Oil and Energy Stocks - USO

Iran and Oman are nearing a deal to establish a temporary safe-navigation corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, including joint mine-clearing efforts, while negotiations continue toward a permanent corridor and framework for managing the vital waterway. The prospect of restored shipping has pressured oil prices, with Brent falling below $90 per barrel as vessel traffic remains well below normal levels and markets anticipate reduced geopolitical risk. Why it matters: On Tuesday afternoon, Russian news source RIA Novosti reported that a new ceasefire between Iran and the US could be released in the next few days.

Mark Zuckerberg may testify if the case proceeds.

China’s Moonshot AI is in early talks with Microsoft, Amazon and Google to host its Kimi K3 model on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud, seeking up to a 30% share of related revenue. Space Exploration Technologies Corp - SPCX
+0.13%

Wolfe Research maintained an Outperform rating and a $175 price target on SpaceX, saying Starship’s growth is currently constrained by launch licenses and physical infrastructure despite U.S. efforts to enable more than 1,000 launches annually by 2030. The firm views the $100 billion Starbase Louisiana project as a major step toward enabling high-frequency Starship launches, though its scale and phased construction beginning in 2027 underscore that full reuse and high launch cadence remain years away.
